Scleroderma Skin Disorder- Beware of SclerodermaSkin troubles are fairly common problems that people suffer from. They are mainly classified as skin allergies and skin diseases. Skin allergies are very minor and can be treated with ease. However skin diseases are graver and can cause serious damage not just to the skin but to the overall health of the individual. Scleroderma is one such grave skin disease.
What is Scleroderma?
Scleroderma is a skin disease that causes thickening, hardening, or tightening of the skin, blood vessels and internal organs. Scleroderma is chronic. There are two types
of scleroderma - localized scleroderma and generalized scleroderma.
Localized scleroderma mainly affects the skin. It causes hard and oval patches on the skin. The patches are generally whitish in colour and have a purple ring around the patches. This is called morphia. There can also be thickened skin lines on arms, legs or forehead. This is called linear.
Generalized scleroderma affects the body parts. Limited scleroderma affects internal organs like esophagus, lungs or intestines. Diffuse scleroderma causes skin thickening throughout the body. Internal organs can also be affected.
Symptoms of Scleroderma:
The main symptoms of scleroderma are as follows:
1) Hardening and thickening of skin.
2) Change in skin colour and the skin appears shiny.
3) Loss of hair over affected area.
4) Disappearance of skin creases.
5) Swelling in fingers or toes and ulcers or sores on fingers.
6) Poor blood flow.
7) Tiny blood vessels are seen at the surface of the skin. This is called Telangiectasia.
8) White calcium lumps can be seen under the skin. This is called Calcinosis.
9) Arthritis and muscle weakness.
10) Sjogren's syndrome. This means that the person has dryness of eyes or mouth.
11) Digestive, heart, lung and kidney malfunctioning.
Causes of Scleroderma
The causes of Scleroderma are not yet known for certain. However it has been deduced that due to it, the body produces excess protein called collagen. This is deposited which causes thickening and hardening.
Treatment of Scleroderma
The treatment for the disease includes the use of drugs like NSAID or aspirin for inflammation and pain. Physicians also prescribe steroids to treat muscle and joint problems and antacids to reduce heartburn. Also medication is prescribed to control blood pressure and to increase and regulate blood flow.
Conclusion
Treating Scleroderma is easy if the person suffering from it follows some simple routine apart from the prescribed treatment. He must exercise regularly and take care and protect his skin from injury. Scleroderma can last for a very long time. Thus to cope up with it the individual must try o reduce the stress caused by it and maintain a positive attitude always.
