What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder. In this the special skin cells (melanocytes) that produce the pigment melanin in the skin as well as the tissues (mucous membranes) that cover the inside of mouth, nose,
genital and rectal areas, and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. Due to this, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo may also turn white.

Causes of Vitiligo:

The causes of vitiligo are yet to be ascertained. However experts have suggested some theories concerning the disease which are as follows:

1) The first theory suggests that people suffering from vitiligo develop antibodies that, instead of protecting them, backfire against them and destroy their special cells that produce the pigment melanin. Melanin is the pigment which renders color to the skin.

2) The second theory suggests that that the melanocytes somehow attack and destroy themselves. According to reports some people with vitiligo have known to suffer from the disease due to a single event such as severe sunburn or an episode of emotional distress. Events of this nature, however, have not been scientifically proven to cause vitiligo and may simply be coincidences.

Some of the symptoms of vitiligo are as follows:

1) Vitiligo is usually first takes the form of white patches (depigmentation) on the skin. These patches are mainly observed in sun-exposed areas. Hence it first affects the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Apart from it the other common areas are the armpits and groin, and around the mouth, eyes, nostrils, navel, and genitals.
2) It is also observed that sometimes people suffering from vitiligo develop depigmented patches on only one side of their bodies.
3) People with vitiligo may have premature graying of the scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard.
